The Renaissance Period

The Renaissance Period is described as a period of rebirth in a country or a nation. A Renaissance period entails flourishing arts in terms of literature, theater, musicianship, and more. The Renaissance Period flourished in London under King Henry VIII, who focused on literature and theater as well as reformation.

Literature and theater were very important to the culture of London during the Renaissance. London was the center for book publishing as well as a high sales volume in uncensored books. The highest selling types of books were sold in London during their “rebirth”. Renaissance privileged classics like literature and theater. They believed it applied a focus on sophistication and the growth of an individual's inteligence. In this period we would see more public theaters and plays (about religion, protestantism, etc.).

In the beginning and during the Renaissance period it was a recurring motif that women could not and should not rule. Queen Elizabeth I was a very important part of the reformation for women and how others portrayed them in terms of power. Queen Elizabeth was very smart and did not want to marry so that she could be independent and not be controlled. I found this very interesting that in these times a woman would not marry to radiate her level of power to others.

Queen Elizabeth I was one of the first women to break the threshold regarding women and their inability to rule. Medieval times did not present many women rulers as it was a lot less common in those times. I found it very interesting reading about how Queen Elizabeth I portrayed actions similar to civil rights movements we see today.
